Description
A tree stump with a large woody fungus (usually grey/black) which broke during the recent storms. A large piece was lying on the ground, the remainder still attached to the stump. I came back an hour or two later and most of the weeping had dried. Photo at ankle level, natural light. Dimmed out two white pieces of fungus above the orange near the top (sort of burnt in), else cleaned up the edges. The colours are accurate.

Anything of note, however I would like specific help on the original versus the crop - including any other crop ideas.

Canon 90D, 17 to 70mm at 37mm, F13, 1/85 sec, ISO 400. My hands on the ground nestling the camera with the subject some 100mm from the lens.

Rob, it’s an intriguing subject. I prefer the first version. The different texture at the top adds interest to the image. There are lots of interesting details here. Technically I don’t see any faults.
It appears that you didn’t have much latitude in cropping this one, as you have a blank space at the lower left and intruding clutter in the upper right. Here’s a revision to show my thoughts. I think the yellow object in the upper right is distracting and should be removed. I also found the change of color in the upper right distracting and changed the color of that area to match its surroundings.
Don’s rework is certainly interesting, Rob. Alternatively, I could see a bit cropped off the right of the cropped version to completely concentrate on the brighter patch in the center left. It’s a lovely image regardless of how you crop it.
Although I like Don’s crop and Dennis’ suggestion, I think a crop from the right as suggested by Dennis and a crop from the left would further highlight the brighter patch.
