Imaginary mountains

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Lately I’ve been photographing rocks a lot. These are fairly small rocks in a desert mountain area. When I processed the image I tried to make it resemble a wall of mountains.

Specific Feedback

Very cool! With no clear indication of scale it could be an aerial, drone or otherwise. Colors and tonal range are very pleasing – no suggestions for improvement!

Don, you’ve really captured the impression of a huge escarpment that has been weathered and worn down for millennia. I really like the sharp little crags in this. The scale is indeed hard to measure, but this really has the look of craggy mountains.

This is really nice, Don. It certainly looks like mountains until you start figuring out the lichen. An interesting looking formation. I like the shapes of the individual “peaks”.

Thanks, folks.

I like the idea and the composition. The light is not optimal but pretty good. The only issues are technical. There isn’t good resolution. I’m not sure if it’s due to the quality of the sensor, or the lens, or the diffraction due to the f/20, or movement during the 1.3 secs. For this image to stand out the small detail need to be clearly seen in both the shadows and the brighter areas.

Igor, thank you for the thoughtful critique. For better or for worse, I made the opposite call when I was working this one up. The original photo was sharp. The details in the lichen were very clear and I thought that gave too much of a clue to scale. I also thought that if these were mountains, there would be some haze. So I added a softening layer. I duplicated the base layer, added Gaussian blur At 34%, reduced the opacity to 20 %. Given your comments, I will reconsider when I get back from traveling.
