The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
One of my favorite Black Oak trees in Yosemite Valley on a fine Autumn morning caught my eye from across the meadow. Fortunately, I had time to set up the 4x5 and make the exposure before the light blew out. The wall in the background is Middle Cathedral Rock.

Specific Feedback
Getting the color and tonality of the bright leaves was a challenge. Did I succeed?
I also did significant burning of the background granite and also adjusted its color balance for a more neutral color.
Any other thoughts are always appreciated.

I love the subtle arc in the Black Oak and the very neutral color balance that Protra gave this photo. Its not understated but quietly glorious. Its wonderful how only the Oak is lit, or apparently so. I don’t know, but it seems like working with the 4x5 always seemed to give photos that were subtle but deeply moving.
I’m glad you caught it, because my favorite part about this is the spotlight effect. It’s wonderful on the tree, but even better on the grass at the base of the tree.
Both the leaves and the granite look great to me. My only thought is that the tree on the left steals more attention than I would prefer. While it does add framing, I think the scene would be better if it wasn’t there. Since that wasn’t possible, this is a good second choice.
You couldn’t have invented better light for this one, Preston. Wow! I’m always attracted to intimate landscapes and this is a fine one. I love that the colors are subdued but carry just enough punch to catch the eye. This feels very much like I’m standing in the meadow viewing it with my own eyes, and I hope you take that as a compliment. Perfect!
Hi Preston,
The light on that black oak is exquisite to say the least. I love the graceful arc in the tree and the colors look spot on for my tastes as does the processing. I am also enjoying that soft subtle light on the pine on the left as it almost looks like reflected light. Beautifully done IMO.
Hi Preston – I like that you have favorite trees in the valley. I’ve learned slowly that great landscape shots require repeatedly visiting such favorites. I’m going to take a chance on disagreeing with my fellow shooters, likely more qualified critics, and say I need the tree to be brighter. I don’t need the cliffs brightened as much as I need a sense of deep, cool shade in the valley mornings and late afternoons. Maybe I’m a victim of the trend to overdo contrast in landscapes, but I’ve seen enough blazing fall trees in the valley to want them to stand out.
