About those stripe patterns:

Each zebra has a unique pattern. Foals recognise their mothers by that pattern. When they migrate, the foal runs beside the mother, keeping the pattern in sight. If the foal should lose its mother, its cries might succeed in calling her back, or not – in which case the herd will kill it to protect the herd from the predators that will be attracted by the crying.

Zebras like to hang out with Wildebeest (gnu). Wildebeest like long grass; zebras like short grass. Wildebeest have excellent hearing and smell, and zebras have good eyesight, which wildebeest do not.

Very good, Pieter. I like the composition and the background gives hints of the habitat without being intrusive. Depth of field looks pretty good, though possibly stopping down just a bit more would have made the right zebra marginally sharper. Your discussion makes me wonder if there are particular parts of the anatomy that the foals key in on since they are normally behind or beside the mares.

Pieter: What a great portrait. The head position of the right zebra makes the mane look like a mohawk haircut. Wonder if he’s a teenager :roll_eyes:. I also like your DOF and the overall comp. Very nicely crafted image. >=))>
