About This Image
Mesmerized by wisps of fog and the sound of birds greeting the new day, I spent peaceful hour or so back in Julyat Hyalite Reservoir before wandering off into the woods. A relatively cloudless sky had me searching for interesting compositions. As the Sun crested the ridge to my east, it highlighted a ridge line of trees on the far side of the reservoir. It seemed to be the perfect inverted background for these clumps of grass protruding from the surface of the water. I had left my taller tripod in the car, so it took a minute to find a spot where I could get the grasses out of the reflection of the mountains. I would have preferred to have the grass a little farther forward, but a large Willow Bush prevented me from backing up to higher ground!

Out of the camera, the grass was nearly silhouetted. It made the foreground appear too dark, so I lightened it a bit. It’s amazing how well the masking tool in Lightroom can mask a subject! I shot this at 8 seconds to smooth out the slightly wavy water (mostly from ducks off to the side!) and create a bit of an abstract reflection. I think this works better than a perfect reflection, given the more precise reflection of the grass in the shallow water. What do you think? I think the of the sharp angles created by the grass and its reflection contrast nicely with the softer background reflection.
