Jewel in the Grass

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I took this 3 days ago in the north of S. Korea. Wagimo signatus is a rare hairstreak. On iNaturalist it’s only been recorded from Japan, all captive specimens, and only one of these in the last 20 years. It posed briefly in the grass, then flashed away on shiny, dark blue wings.

Specific Feedback

I would like the butterfly to be a bit sharper - I couldn’t get close. But the surrounding grass gives it a more dreamy aspect perhaps.

Technical Details

D500 + 105mm macro 1/250 f10 ISO 4000

Cropped in and adjusted tonalities in Lightroom. Topaz Denoise. Then in Photoshop, selective sharpening of the butterfly and darkening of some bright bits of surroundings.

Great shot, Mike! All conditions considered, if it were mine, I’d feel quite lucky.

It looks perfectly sharp to me, floating in that sea of lovely grass. The colors and contrast are lovely. It appears you have scored quite a capture here!!

I’m always captivated by the images you capture, and the descriptions – are you an entomologist?

No @Diane_Miller, just an enthusiast! Over the last 10 years or so, I’ve become pretty obsessed with macro, though, especially of butterflies. And I’m fortunate to have got to know a couple of real experts, so can always check with them, or on the internet. Thanks for your kind words.

Thank you, @linda_mellor !

Great as is - plenty sharp, especially considering your slightly-oblique angle.
REALLY nice work!

Mike the BF looks acceptably sharp to me, even in the largest view. It definitely stands out from the green surroundings. I’m not sure it would be an improvement, but have you tried a crop with the BF a bit further right in the frame? It’s near center placement does help emphasis the BF as presented. I like the wedge of leaves that immediately surround it.
