Kettle River Gorge

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Kettle River runs along the Canada U.S. Boarder. The Gorge is between Grand forks B.C. and Christina lake. The image is a 3 frame focus stack. I’m hoping the photo leads your eye from the falls down river to the Bridge.

Specific Feedback

I wanted to showcase the falls and the rail bridge which is now part of the trans Canada trail. I wanted to limit the amount of the rock in the foreground and yet keep as much of the falls in the frame as possible. In doing so there’s a section of rock on the left side that is only slightly in the frame. That bothers me, however to bring it into the frame more would add additional foreground rock which I don’t think would be good composition. Did you notice the rock on the frame left? Does it bother you or is it just me?

Technical Details

The photo was shot with a Nikon D850 , 3 frames focus stacked with a 24 to 70 lens .

Doug, thanks for setting the scene. It adds richness to your composition. The brightest part of the image is the white water, but I do follow the river and notice the bridge. However, I tend to stay with the water and the rocks around the white water. I notice the rocks you mention, but the crop seems appropriate and I don’t mind that we see only a little bit in that area. If you want us to linger at the bridge, you might consider darkening some of the white water, but I don’t think that would improve the composition. The focus stacking has yielded a pleasant sharpness throughout.
