Let sleeping ducks lie

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The stunning paperbark trees and the tunnel down the center attracted me. I had to walk in the lake and only later observed the ducks. An absolutely still day where reflections were king. The slight ripples are from me walking in the water.

Specific Feedback

I tried to create a “tunnel” and hence faux 3d using light levels in post processing. Have I achieved the the desired effect? Please comment on the crop too - is the larger crop too busy? Please do not disturb the ducks.

The photo was taken at Brown lake, North Stradbroke Island, Qld.

Technical Details

Canon 90D, 70mm, 1/12 sec, F11 ISO 100, tripod, wet feet.

Great branches and reflections. I prefer the larger crop and find it less busy, partly because there are no pale sky reflections. If it were mine I’d get rid of the duck, as it is very small, incidental and close to the edge (Sorry duck!). Others will probably love the duck(s) though. Plus you’d have to change the title. A pity your feet twitched, but, in the final analysis, you have a very original shot here.

I looked at the first crop large and thought it quite nice, then right-arrowed to the second and, whoa, it was much more striking to me. Maybe the greater symmetry did it. Nice photo.

Being the oddball that I am, I actually prefer a crop without the reflection. Puts much more emphasis on the ducks if that was your intention. Jmho of course.

Ducks or not, I prefer the tighter crop. Much more symmetrical and really pulls my eye down the tunnel. Nicely done, Rob.

A wonderful landscape image from my own backyard. I have quite a few images of this lake, but none as interesting as the one/s you have posted!

I think you’ve done a pretty fair job of creating that “tunnel” effect, particularly in the second image. It seems to draw me in. I also like the idea of losing the brighter sky in the reflection.

Hi Rob,
This is one of those images you have to open up and view large to really appreciate. This scene is complex, but you organized it very well and made some order out of all that chaos. I think your processing achieved your goal of creating a tunnel effect with the trees and reflection. For my own personal tastes I would crop some more from your original version. I too like the ducks; they are a nice visual treat to find while exploring the scene. I hope you do not mind, but here is a rework with what I was thinking. Just my opinion of course. Very nicely done.

I don’t think you can go wrong with either one. I keep bouncing back and forth and liking first one and then the other. I like the circular symmetry with the center having bilateral symmetry. That’s the 2nd image. The first is also fascinating but the center plays a less important part. They’re like horns or snakes. There’s more implied movement. They’re different ideas.

Thank you all for your efforts re this image. Each crop and suggestion is valid. It really seems to come down to personal preference.

Thank you again
