It was striking!

Great shot at what I think is a Rough-legged Hawk. Light morph.

Dennis Plank and I were at Ridgefield yesterday and saw this same hawk. It was really foggy but O did manage a few shots of it. We thought it was a light morph Rough Legged Hawk when we saw it and an examination of all the images I got make that most likely. You clearly had better light than we did. Nice job on the exposure, detail, and head turn.

Rough-legged hawk in typical plumage for sure–nice shot…Jim

Nice, Dan. Excellent detail and the same kind of nice head turn it was giving us yesterday. No nits on this one.

Thanks all, A first for me, what a beautiful bird.
BTW, it took off and flew right at me and I just blew it…
5 oof frames…
I do have other poses which I might post.

An extreme crop. 10% of original.

Rough legged for me too, based especially on the small beak compared to red tails. Compare them between the species, and you’ll see it.

Such fine detail that even the extreme crop looks great. Beautiful bird that I’ve never seen before.

Really cool encounter. The IQ on this shot appears to have held up better than the other, and the bokeh is better as well. I’d love to see more photos of this bird, which means you need to go back!

Excellent shot, Dan - you mentioned that it flew right at you, but you weren’t able to catch it.
Just FYI, It’s for this reason, I’m always set for flying birds - a minimum of 1200 ISO, usually 1600, and as fast a SS as conditions allow.
If the bird is clearly unperturbed and not looking as if it will fly, I take some high-ISO shots then lower the ISO.
I’m figuring out how to set a Custom Fx for flying birds so I can switch back and forth quickly.
