Mallard take off

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I photographed this mallard taking off at my neighborhood lake a few days ago. I like the walking on water poses.

Specific Feedback

I shot these R7 images in electronic shutter and I think the slanted tree trunk reflections are from rolling shutter. I think next time if I encounter these reflections I will try shooting in electronic first curtain or mechanical.
Any thoughts?

Nice of her to give you great eye contact all the way through, Allen. All the shots are superbly crisp and I like your framing. Hard to pick a favorite, but I think I’d go with #2 in terms of energy and wing position.

Cool!! I love #4 the best but all are wonderful with excellent detail! I love the view of the flaps down (for extra lift for a short takeoff on a plane – I guess birds do the same thing).

The rolling shutter thing is interesting. You could test it at the lake without waiting for a bird if you have an idea how fast you were panning.

I didn’t notice your question about the rolling shutter, Allen. When I’ve had issues with it, it’s been bird wings and they have been severely distorted. I’m sure you can find some information on-line. I have a friend who was shooting a lot of birds in flight with the Sony A7R5 which has that issue and he switched to mechanical shutter (still no mirror slap, so it’s pretty quiet).
