Mallards in the Morning Sun and cropped repost

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was initially drawn to the reflections and color of the water and waited until the group of Mallards swam into the scene and was rewarded when one of them flapped his wings.

Specific Feedback

Any thoughts appreciated.

HI Allen, looks like you got good focus on the flapping bird. The rest of the image is quite nice too with complimentary colors and the grass showing habitat. I like the water reflections as you state but I am wondering how a version would be with a bit cropped from the bottom keeping enough water to show appreciation for the reflections but putting more attention on the ducks. A fine image either way.

Hi Allen. Even though you’d lose some of the lovely water, I think going to a more pano presentation by taking some off the bottom to prevent splitting the image half way would make for a more interesting composition. The light is wonderful in this image.

Allen, this is what I call “getting your ducks in a row”. Very nice image, and I love the one that’s flapping his wings being in the center. A pano may improve this lovely image, (certainly worth trying) but it’s nice shot the way it is too, I think. Nicely done.

Hi Allen
I can see this as a pano, if for no other reason than to make the Mallards larger in the frame. Nice work.

Thanks for the comments and pano suggestion, @Allen_Sparks , @Dennis_Plank , @Shirley_Freeman , and @Peter_Morrissey. I posted a cropped version above, took out some water. I like the result as it now appears we are more at eye level with the ducks.
