Critique Style Requested: Standard

Description

Lake Aloha, in California’s Desolation Wilderness, is an inspiring location and at night with the Milky Way in the sky, I was filled with awe. I wanted to capture that sense. Did I succeed?

You did!! You captured wonderful detail in the MW with good star quality. The blue hour white balance is quite effective, possibly aided by the water. A very minor point, that is certainly artist’s choice, would be to remove the satellite trails. The clouds or fog on the horizon are a nice feature, and the light from distant civilization is well-handled. The line of the lakeshore is lovely but things feel a bit off-balance with the empty LR corner. The gradient there helps, though. An alternative would be a crop from the bottom, perhaps to just above the largest boulder.

It looks like there is a large dust spot just above the horizon at the left edge of the cloud. At a wide aperture it’s hard to be sure, but a large one like this may not be on the sensor but on the back element of the lens.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Brad,

Awesome photo and yes I think you did capture the grandeur of the Milkyway. I love the blue hour toning throughout the photo. I can see what @Diane_Miller is saying about the LR corner, but its not a deal breaker for me. That circular smudge on the horizon is strange though. The only thing that I would say was missing, and I am not even sure its even possible, but it would be something else if the lake reflected the Milkyway as well. Nice work!

Yes indeed, you did succeed in capturing the awe of the night sky. Great image all around, the stars look great. Must have been someting being out at Lake Aloha at night.
