Cloned out the Sky:

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

A view from the Hall of Mosses trail in the Hoh Rain Forest in the Olympic National Park last May.
Forest scenes like this have always been a challenge for me–trying to find some order in the wildness.

Specific Feedback

Any comments appreciated. I had a polarizer on which brought the saturation of the greens up way high, so I have desaturated them quite a bit. Too much?

Also, I know there’s a couple of bright sky spots showing through at the top, but cropping ruined the image. Should I try to cover them with foliage? Or is it even worth it?

Very nice, sir! I think you did a good job finding order in the chaos. I think the saturation is perfect, and the details come through very well. At to those sky spots; I would agree regarding filling them in. I think this will make a nice print f you choose to do so.

Good job, David!

Thank you, Preston. I appreciate your comments and suggestions. I will fill in the sky parts and repost.

Cheers,
David

A fine shot, David. I think the revision is significantly better.

I think you nailed it with your repost. Greens look good, certainly not desaturated too much. This is just an FYI since it’s so small in the frame, but you might want to take note of using f/11 @ 60mm for future reference. There’s not quite enough dof in the FG. Hardly noticeable.

Thanks for your comments, Michael. I saw the oof foreground. I should have either gone with f/16 and dealt with diffraction, or focused so that maybe the far distant trees were a touch oof…this is still a learning process.

David, absolutely the revised post is the ticket here. I miss things that cause eye wander too at times and once it’s eliminated the scene falls into place immediately. As for the subject here, this is a positive statement. If I saw this in the woods I’d be stepping right along. This thing gave me the willies at first. But after looking for awhile I can really appreciate the gracefulness of the moss… :+1: :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Hi David,
I am loving your rework with those bright areas of sky removed. With them gone it lets my eye wander around the image and savor all those lush vibrant greens. IMO the greens look just fine; in fact perfect for my tastes. Forest scenes are definitely chaotic, but you organized everything perfectly. My only suggestion is the OOF areas; already mentioned by my brother @Michael_Lowe; along the bottom edge of the frame. If you are so inclined you can use the remove tool to get rid of those areas.I hope you do not mind, but here is a quick rework using the remove tool to get rid of those areas. Just my opinion of course. I use focus stacking in my Z 7 when I need that extra DOF. I think this would make a lovely print.
