NZ Variable Oystercatcher

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

What an interesting bird! “Variable” is a very descriptive name.
There are a number of morphs, including this all-black one, as well as varying degrees of white on the breast and body.
Others morpha posted later.

Specific Feedback

New Zealand is full of marvelous rocky beaches, as well as stunning clouds.
I wanted to keep many of the rocks here for interest and context.

Comments and suggestions welcome

Nice pose, Sandy and I like the way it fits with the rocks in the background. I could see trying to tease a bit more texture out of the plumage, but it’s tough to do so without making the blacks look too gray.

In Australia we have Sooty Oystercatchers that look very much like this one. They are really lovely birds.

You’ve captured the “march” that oystercatchers do.

I agree with @Dennis_Plank . I reckon there is a lot more texture in the blacks to be found. I do realise you are most likely working off a lap-top or similar, so “seeing” might be the issue.

Interesting bird and nice catch in its environment. Love that long orange beak. Nice walking pose. I could see lightening the image in general and see what that looked like.
