Orion and The Shark

Original

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

For years I have wanted to photograph the Shark Fin near Davenport along the California Coast. I had a clear night tonight and decided to try and get Orion, Sirius, Jupiter, Mars, Procyon, Aldebaran, Pleiades, and so much more along with the Shark Fin. This is just a test, as I worked this on my laptop which does not have the power to handle the sky images properly. I took about 20 sky images that I want to stack in Siril to bring out the Orion arm of the Milkyway. But I will need to work on my desktop to get that done.

Specific Feedback

Any feedback on the composition and sky is appreciated.

Is the blending in the repost better? Any suggestions for improvement?

Technical Details

Nikon D850, Rokinon 14mm f/2.8
Sky: f5.6, 8 sec, ISO 6400
Shark Fin: f11, 1 sec, ISO 100

The Shark Fin was photographed after sunset, giving that faint glow on the cliffs and the glow on the ocean and sky near the horizon

The Sky was photographed later around 10 pm.

One photo of the sky only, was blended with the Shark Fin. Later I will stack all the sky images to get more density in the milky way and then blend with the shark fin. But for now this will have to do.

Youssef, this is a classic night sky, in the sense of how long I had to look before I found Orion. The camera picks up so many more stars than we see by eye, it’s hard to find the constellations. This will look great blended as you’ve got good detail in the water and the rocks to go with a great sky.

This is wonderful! You found a great view and the stars look fine at the image size here. It will be interesting to compare after the processing. My only thought at this stage would be to do a softer blend of the brighter sky and allow fewer stars right at the horizon. Good work! My rig was aimed at the Orion Nebula last night and it was covered with frost crystals this morning – a recording thermometer showed the low to be 15 degrees!
