Out of the nest

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was taken on the morning after the merlin nestling left the nest the previous evening. When I arrived at the site no merlin was in sight. After a while I noticed leaves on a tree right across the road from where I parked, moving around but I could not see what was causing the motion. After about 20 minutes the fledgling showed itself and I was able to take several shots before it disappeared. I good ending to my time with the nesting merlin. Very rare in Ilinois. I was sincerely grateful to have been able to record this event. To have been able to record a bit of natural history.

Specific Feedback

Beautiful shot of the Merlin with a very nice head turn, John. The only thing that bothers me about this image is the odd darker blue halos around the leaves. Were they in the raw file? If so, what raw editor (e.g. Lightroom) are you using? There should be a lens correction buried way down in the menus on the righthand side. Mine seems to keep getting turned off and I don’t have a clue why it’s not on as a default. I don’t know if it would clear up the issue, but this is a good enough image to spend some extra time on the processing.

Denis, thank you for your comments. This is a jpeg image. I will take aother look at it.
John

Hi John
Sonds like you had a good time with the Merlins. The photograph seems to be on the bright side and that may have pushe the background into clipping.
Peter

Thank you Peter, I will take another look at it.
