Pendelton Point Fog Show

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

During our last trip to Blackwater Falls SP in WV my brother and I were treated to a wonderful show of fog swirling about the colorful tree lined walls of Blackwater Canyon. We always check the weather reports for a rain event; as more often than not it produces these dramatic moody conditions we seek out. For this particular image I waited until a patch of that mystical looking fog rolled in behind that single red maple on the ridge line. It was a little challenging; but well worth the effort; as the rain was being blown into our faces which required constant wiping of the front lens element.

Specific Feedback

I am relatively happy with the image, but it is always good to have another set of eyes look it over in case I missed something.

Technical Details

Nikon Z 7, Nikon 100-400 @ 400 mm, f 11 @ 1/10 sec, ISO 200, Kase magnetic CPL, cable release & tripod.

Ed, you’ve got a fine balance here with the prominent and colorful ridge at the front, the cloud in the middle and more color and cloud in the distance. Your persistence paid of well.

Simply gorgeous!! This looks like a location where you could also shoot compositions of just the BG and get wonderful images.

The color mix in those trees is great! Glad you fought through the rain.

My only thought would be to drop the luminosity a tad to let more of the color shine through, but to still leave it pretty bright behind that one red tree (I llike the way the cloud sets that guy off).

Thanks everyone @Mark_Seaver, @Diane_Miller and @John_Williams for taking a moment and leaving your thoughts on this image as it is always appreciated. The conditions were a bit challenging, but it makes me appreciate the end result so much more. So much so that I just made a print of this and entered it in a local art show.
@Mark_Seaver : I too liked the layering in the scene.
@Diane_Miller : When the conditions are right Pendelton Point is one of my favorite locations in the park.
@John_Williams : Thanks for taking the time to do a rework. I like your small tweak.

That’s a beauty, Ed. Guess you’ve finally gotten over your doubts about your 100-400 purchase?
My only small suggestion would be to bring down the luminosity of the larger fog area. I’m not PS expert, but maybe dehaze or a luminosity mask?

I’m just getting caught up on a few images , Ed. I’m glad I went back and saw this one. I love the separation that the fog creates between the foreground and the background foliage. It also looks like you hit Fall colors at peak colors here. Gorgeous colors. The composition is terrific too. Let us know how this does in your competition. Oh, and I think I prefer the rework that John did reducing the brightness of the fog.
