Image Description

As was the case for many New England streams, this was the site of an old mill, and the remnants can still be found downstream. As described in “New England Waterfalls”, this is a block and cascades type of falls, with a 6 foot block and 5 feet of cascades below it.

Pertinent Technical Details

Fuji X-H2, XF16-80 lens, ISO 125, f/8, 1s, 25mm, tripod. Post processing included reducing exposure on the waterfall, adding a bit of contrast, and bringing out the shadows.

You’ve captured a pretty little stream and waterfall here Jim. The surrounding rocks and the background trees add a nice touch to the overall scene. My first thought was that the tree trunk on the left edge was distracting, so I think cropping in from that side would help. It also would give more emphasis to the waterfall, which is the main subject of the image. Darkening the rocks around the stream and the trees behind it

would also help with this. I went ahead and applied these edits on the image. I hope you find this helpful.

Jim, this is a good looking falls and I like your comp. The mix of warm tones in the rocks and leaves contrast well with the water. That looks like a human built wall on both sides of the falls, which is an interesting extra adding to your description of a mill downstream. The water looks a bit blue to me and I agree that a bit more contrast in the trees at the back would be good.

@Mark_Seaver and @Ted_Forman , thank you for your encouraging and helpful comments. Mark, I lowered the blues quite a bit actually and was pleased with the change. Ted, thank you for your efforts; I thought the tree nicely framed the scene but was more of a one-sided distraction.

Jim: Wonderful scene and I especially like the wall structure next to the falls. Like @Mark_Seaver the water does look a bit too blue. I also like @Ted_Forman’s crop although I can see why you like the trunk. Nicely seen, composed and captured. >=))>

Thanks so much Bill; I didn’t realize the “blueness” until I reduced it, ha ha.
