Reflected Light

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was out early one morning in downtown Portland, OR testing a new lens. I saw this building with the morning light being reflected from the east facing building across the street. It made for an interesting study of light and shadow, and repetition.

Specific Feedback

Any comments appreciated. Too much contrast between light and dark?

Technical Details

Nikon Z8, z135mm Plena, f/1.8 @ 1/4000sec, ISO 64, Handheld

Back in my Canon DSLR days, I had a collection of Zeiss Prime lenses to work with. I’ve missed that feel and joy with the mirrorless zoom lenses. So, I sold them and picked up the Z 135mm f/1.8 and the Z 35mm f/1.2. They have made me excited to photograph again.

Interesting choice of lens and any lens that lets you do 1/4000 and iso 64 is something pretty special. I really like the contrasts of dark and light in this image, David and I certainly don’t consider them too much. There’s superb detail in both the shadows and highlights and the contrast adds a lot of drama to the image. Very well seen and executed.

Dennis, thank you for your comments. I appreciate them.

I know a lot of people think of the fast prime lenses (35/50/85/135) as portrait lenses but they’re great for any kind of photography. I like them for two reasons: how sharp they are and how creamy the out of focus (bokeh) areas are. Here’s an example of what I like to do with these lenses:

Of course they work wonderfully stopped down too.

Cheers,
David

Great Image David. The Tone and Contrast and B&W all work perfectly. Very Cool. You captured the light and early morning walk and vision …Really Nice !!!

Wonderful!! And a great reminder about fast primes, in the days of large zoom range lenses.

I was scrolling down to read the text and glanced back up to find I really liked it cropped down to just below the sky. And the flower is awesome! It belongs in Flora! What a perfect arrangement of the bouquet! And yes, the bokeh (pronounced the same way, I’ve read) is awesome!

We call it Tarweed down here, and I had to look it up to be sure that wasn’t just a local name, and I was relieved to find it is also known as Elegant Tarweed. That’s what I will call it henceforth.

@Gill_Vanderlip, thank you for the nice comments. Much appreciated.

@Diane_Miller, thank you also for the nice comments and crop thoughts. Also, thanks for identifying the flower species. I can add that to the description of the images now. This weed blooms most all summer long here and it’s a lot of fun to try to get decent comps. I’ll post if over in Flora. Thanks again.

Cheers,
David

Your image is a confirmation of when out shooting, “Look Up” (and look behind you). Wonderful contrast.

Too funny, Gary. Thanks.

Looking at this again, I think my crop idea was yet another of my bad ideas (at which I seem to be excelling lately). Then I wondered about turning down the lights on the BG.

I’d leave the original background in.

Hi @Diane_Miller, toning down the sky gives it a semi-night time look. Interesting.

@gDan52, I think I will leave it as is. Photographer’s prerogative :grinning_face:
