Rose Waves

I used a LumeCube panel light to provide some backlight to this rose. I get captivated by rose petals when shot very close; they seem to flow like water. I hope that gets conveyed here.

Hi Kevin! This is a beautiful subject full of grace and elegance. I think the presentation works well overall. My comments focus mostly on little tweaks. First, I like the flow of the photo better when it is flipped. You could also consider filling in the upper left corner (in my version, with a very rough processing job). That little triangle of peachy yellow breaks the flow of the petals for me. Based on your description of the photo, I am guessing that you love the glowing yellow. I think a little bit of desaturation to the yellows could also work, even though that desaturation definitely takes away a bit of the glow.

One other tiny thing about the composition… Two of the petal edges feel a little too close to the photo’s edges for me. I might like to see a bit more breathing room so they are either totally in the frame or totally out of the frame.

Finally, I did a quick conversion to black and white and it looked quite nice! I think you work mostly/exclusively in color so I didn’t share that conversion but thought I would mention it for anyone reading this comment who has an interest in monochrome presentations.

I love what you’ve done here! The crop and the reduction in yellow saturation both significantly enhance the flow of the image. I also need to think more about flipping; it’s something that mostly slips my mind but it works so well here. Thanks very much for your critique of this and the others! We appreciate your time & careful consideration.
