Running from the enemy

Critique Style Requested: Standard

Description

This was shot in Antarctica… It was challenging as I was on a moving Zodiac with 10 other people. Most didn’t appreciate my long lens. I was on my knees and used the edge of the Zodiac to stabilize the heavy lens. I saw a seal jump off an iceberg and then these little guys went flying out of the water. I used a 200-400 lens and this was shot at 400 …

Specific Feedback

This is one of my favorite wild life shots. I wanted to share and see if you all agreed or had any thoughts for improvement .

What a great shot, Joann. I can see why it’s one of your favorites. Good detail and you caught the action at the right time, and the trailing water adds a lot. Also, the background is perfect for your subject and elevates the image from what it would be without it.

Hi Joann, what a really fine image! Love the action you captured from the penguins in mid-air with trailing splashes. Including the ice cliff in the background is fantastic giving a further sense of place and awe. I can appreciate this being one of your favorites. Well done!

Wonderful action Joann. Hard to believe that anyone would go there without a camera and long lens, but I guess not everyone can be a photographer. You caught some really great action here and the water splashes are awesome. The mid-air poses really convey their speed.

This is gorgeous and wonderful, and a whole bunch of extra points for managing to shoot this from a moving Zodiac using the edge for support! (And dodging ten other people who presumably could have cared less…)

Hi Joann
I give two points for going to Antarctis and 10 points for this photograph. Nice work.

Joann: there’s nothing different you could have done to improve this image. It’s excellent in an aspects. It’s a wall hanger.

What a great moment and image, very dynamic positions, wonderfully captured.

That’s a wonderful and fun image. Not easy to capture. I suppose the other folks on the zodiac were not photographers.

A fantastic moment, and I’m so glad you included the background ice to give a sense of place and add some texture to the frame.

I feel there’s some indecision in your composition. You either want to lead the eye to the left—in which case I’d include more canvas that way if there is any—or you want to center on the two subjects. Either option works, but I feel this presentation is in No Man’s Land somewhere between them.
