Sailing into the Mist

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Almost every morning is misty like this around Bellingham Bay in Washington State. I came across this particular scene just a couple days ago. It took me a few minutes to get my camera and set it up. Once I took the picture the sailboat had almost disappeared into the mist. I used Dehaze in LR to make the sailboat stand out a little more.

Willem, your sailor looks both very peaceful and maybe a bit lonely. I like the mood here as it captures well what attracts many folks to sailing. This is one instance where Dehaze seems to have worked well. If you watch the histogram as you increase the Dehaze slider, you’ll see that it basically darkens the lower half of the histogram. Thus, you can get the same effect with a linear mask of the lower half (2/3 rds) of this view. With a mask, you can do more targeted adjustments, watch the histogram as you try adjustments. My one minor nit here is that the waves at the bottom seem a bit “crunchy” because of the bits of black scattered throughout.
