Cheers David! I did actually play around with a 16x9; this is a 16x10. The main element I wanted to avoid cutting off with a 16x9 was the little V-shaped texture right up in the top middle, hence the current crop

Ah got ya. Yeah it always helps to play with crops. I actually spend more time playing with crops than I do editing now haha
There is a square crop of the right side I think would be very good.
I know what you mean by the attraction of ambiguity. The composition you have looks like the map of the world with the smooth areas being the oceans.
