Description
Here in Montana, Fall sometimes is just an extension of Summer, just with less sunlight. Othertimes, Fall can mean a fleeting visit from Winter. After several inches fell overnight around Bozeman, I took a drive up a local canyon to see what I could see. Recent shoulder surgery has had me cooped up with little opportunity to photograph, but I just couldn’t resist. Thank goodness for tripods and cable releases since it was my right shoulder.
Specific Feedback
I’ve increased the luminosity of the reds and yellows. Did I overdo that or does it work? I also added a vignette to try to create a little separation from the background trees. All that snow on the limbs is a bit busy, but also a bit stimulating. I wanted to get more of the foreground because of that lovely little fir tree on the left, but I was actually standing in the road and there is a guardrail right under the bottom edge of this photo.

Paul, this is really a lovely early-winter scene. I love the red and yellow leaves against the fresh snow.
Overall, it seems quit dark to me and in need of perking up a bit.
I hope you don’t mind that I played with it a bit…
lightened the whole thing
slight increase in contrast
brightened the darker yellow leaves
cropped to avoid the dark areas in the upper right
used a very small bit of Gen Fill to fill in some of the (to me) distracting dark areas among the leaves.
Just some thoughts… see what you think
A wonderful find!
Glad you were able to get out and capture this scene Paul. Hopefully your recovery is going well. This is a wonderful intimate scene of the transition of the seasons. My initial thoughts were exactly the same as @SandyR-B and her rework looks perfect IMO. Beautifully done.
Paul, this is a fine look at last week’s snow, with the colors “peeking” through. I agree that brighter is better. The burned-in upper right looks about right and nicely sets off the foreground tree. Best wishes with your recovery.
Paul. I really love this one. I love the soft snow covering the thin branches going everywhere and the spots of bright reds and yellows. Beautiful. I’m sorry, but I also liked the idea of applying a posterizing filter from my gallery of artistic filters just for fun. I hope you don’t mind too much. This would make a great Christmas card.
