Serendipity Rework

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I went to visit a female swan at a near by cemetery and was saddened to hear that her mate had been killed by a coyote. She is an absolute sweetheart and I enjoy sitting with her. It was so cold out, about 25, and I went to give her some yummy fresh lettuce and took my camera along. The title is such because this was a happy accident. Just happened to get her “diving” for food and the “splash” as well as her head still being somewhat visible. I am in love with her.

A beautiful image, Judi. You caught a very cool moment and did a great job of freezing it. The only thing I would wish for is just a tad more room on the left to complete the splash circle and possibly a touch more on the bottom. It works as-is, but that extra room would be nice. Great job on the exposure, depth of field, etc.

What a cool photo - serendipity, indeed. How sad, though, that she’s lost her mate.

I agree with Dennis that it would have been good to have a bit more room on the left. Otherwise, this is super.

An unique and interesting shot. The timing was perfect.

Thanks so much. As the name implies, it was a “happy accident” that i was not quite ready for (the head dunk). I am however trying to figure out how to extend that left side some. i know there is a way… Thank you for your valuable input!

Totally agree. Sometimes…it just happens. I was happy to catch as much as I did. I will work on adding to the left. I think there is a way, I just need to figure it out in photoshop. Thank you!!

Thank you! It was unexpected. She was posing so nicely then bam, a head dunk. lol I wasn’t prepared, thus the placement. But i like the water droplets too.

Judi, to add canvas to the left in PS:

Image > Canvas Size
In the dialog box, choose percent (or pixels, whatever units you prefer)
Make the width 105% or so, leave the height at 100%
Move the anchor point to the right side
Choose canvas color (white would be fine)
Click OK

Then make a rectangular marquee selection of the new canvas + a little bit of the existing.
Do a content-aware fill (Edit > Content Aware Fill).

You my dear are a PEACH. Thank you!!! I shall post again. Thank you, thank you!!

Thank you all for the comments, and thank you Bonnie for the direction!! Better? Not perfect I know…i’m a work in progress.

You’re welcome, Judi. It looks fine. You can post the rework in the original post if you want. Click the little pencil icon at the bottom of your original post and a window will open so you can add in the rework. If you do that, change the title to indicate a rework (I usually just add “+ Rework” to the original title. Adding the rework to the original is a great way to quickly flip through versions to see the differences.

And…thank you yet again! I’m slowly learning this site.

The repost looks fine, Judi. Nice going.

Thanks so much Dennis!!

Hi, this cemetery is known for having swans. Two at the most. It brings comfort to those who have loved ones buried there. There are benches around the pond, and a few small picnic tables. I love taking her some spinach or lettuce, now that I know that is what is best for her. Not bread. They finally put up signs stating so. She gets a lot of visitors and I enjoy talking with her and just letting her get used to me. I’m glad that you enjoyed it, and my visits to her. I’m not sure who enjoys it more, her, or I. I think I probs do. :). She is quite peaceful to sit by.

A lovely and original shot! She’ll probably give you more interesting poses too as you get to know each other.

Hi Judi, great catch - really interesting and just at the right moment. The repost looks great and is a nice improvement. Well done.

Judi, it’s amazing what our software can do these days. The repost is very, very nice. Your story is great and touching too. Thanks for sharing.

There is a wetlands near me that I go to a lot lately and there is an outbreak of Avian Flu among the Cackling Geese. It is so sad to see them struggling, clearly sick, dying and dead. It tears at my heart.

Cheers,
David

Thanks so much Allen. I appreciate the kind words. I try my best at bird photography, and well…struggle at times. Flight, movement, etc. I so enjoy being with her, she brings me calm, and I hope I do the same for her. Thanks again.
