I would probably have put it in Landscape, Delton, but I’ll leave that up to Don, the moderator of this forum. I can certainly see the abstract aspect of this image and I love the shapes and shadows, but the background mountains kind of give it away for me and I don’t see a crop that would work to make it just about the shapes and light.
That said, regardless of our human need for categorizing everything, I find this a beautiful image and my eye doesn’t pay much attention to the far background, but lingers on the wonderful shapes and light in the dunes. A beautiful image.
I love dune images despite their abundance/popularity. As Dennis said, this would be better in the landscape category ask me how I know…been there and done that with what I thought was abstract! Back to your image, the sharp lines in the dune crests along with the play of light and shadows are fantastic. The hint of the mountains in the background gives a little better sense of place for me vs 100% dunes. The challenge with dunes is sometimes narrowing down the composition where less can be more. I still very much like your image and how you processed the BW conversion! I have yet to make it to Eureka yet, thanks for the inspiration!
Your dune picture caught my attention and I find this one interesting. I like the angular middle section bordered by the smooth dunes. To my eyes the middle angular dunes are the subject, unique in the image. My only critique would be to try to amplify the middle by cropping out the white bottom part and darkening the background mountains making the middle the brighter tones. I’ll try to upload a quick edit. I think you have an interesting image of the dunes I find different.
Don’t want to beat this one, but will also mention the category placement - NO BIGGIE! Yes, perhaps more suited in Landscape, but this has definite graphic and abstract qualities. So no worries posting.
Love this dune image! I’ve been there once, and it is a bit remote and depending on where you park, you can hoof it for 45 min before even getting close. ha ha.
The combination of lines, graphics, shapes, as well as light and dark tones just seem to all work together nicely. B&W treatment is perfect and appropriate.
My suggestions are right in line with what @Steve_Diephuis posted, so I won’t repeat. The slight crop and edits work well to bring, and keep attention in the main, highlighted dune. The light and tonal range is just wonderful.
Steve et al: Thank you for the input. I like the crop; and it may help to have the backfround mountains darkened. We need a couple vehicles to go in there to do the place justice/
