South Clear Creek Falls

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I enjoyed the texture of the water at the base of the falls the most. Therefore, my strategy was to try and make this the subject of my image. To help me achieve my goal, I 1) framed the image such that I left out the top of the falls, 2) tried several shutter speeds to achieve the texture I desired, 3) darkened the area around the falls, and 4) turned the image into a black & white image. In addition I used a small amount of dehaze to remove a small amount of the nature spray/small water droplets.

Specific Feedback

Is there any other processing technique I could have done to emphasize the texture of the water and make it stand out.

Technical Details

canon R5 on tripod
canon 24 - 70 RF F2.8 lens at 56mm, ISO 640 and 1/10 sec

Hi Willem! I like this image. To me, the SS and exposure are just right. The high contrast helps make the water pop.

This is a very good photo as is, but if you wanted to bring out a little more detail in the rocks while not changing the water at all, you could use a luminosity mask. I would suggest using the TK system, probably a darks 3 or 4 mask.

Hello, Willem,
I really like the black and white conversion as well as the general mood of the photo.
However, I have two small points to make: if the photo were mine, I would have cropped it to completely eliminate the black stone in the LRC, and I would have darkened the ULC slightly.
A beautiful photo anyway.

Hi @Willemd , What a beautiful waterfall image you have shared with us. I really like your choice of B&W and think the conversion really works well. I agree that some more detail texture in the lower tier of rocks and the LRC rock would really help the image. Rather than a luminescence mask which might disrupt the directional quality of the light (that you have caught quite beautifully on the rock wall) use the intersection of brushed mask on the rocks and a gradient mask coming in from the right to make the adjustment. This will let you boost the detail in a directional way from right to left in keeping with how the light falling …HTH
