About This Image

Out walking today - lovely speckled evening light

Feedback Requested

Just any suggestions welcome. I had the wrong lens - needed more reach - but loved the colours and the co-incedental speckled wood butterfly was a bonus. Composition mainly on strongly directional evening light which was a bit harsh and produced some non optimal light and dark bits. One does direct the eye to the butterfly. Amazing hazel galls and nuts

Had my flash but don’t think it contributed much at that distance I was away.

Never taken a natural woodland pic like this before.
Any and all comments and suggestions welcome

Visual Notes

I am enjoying the fresh colours and something /nothing about the image. Or maybe, nothing /something. Nothing hard to ponder.

I’m finding the blues a bit overpowering? I might consider lightening the shadows on the capsules?

[Crop] Just a comparison.

Hi Glenys - thanks
I like your crop and will play with upping the shadows and maybe reduce the vibrancy of the blues.

Huw: Your placement of the butterfly makes it easy to find in this busy scene and increases the delight of the dappled light. I do think your revision is an improvement. Nice job of making a fine image even if the lens available wasn’t the top choice. Well done. >=))>

A very interesting little scene, Huw, with the butterfly as a fine accent point. i like the revision with the exception of the rather bright light on the leaf immediately behind and in front of the butterfly, which tends to pull my eye past it. Perhaps a very subtle darkeniing of the bright area on the leaf and corresponding brightening of the butterfly would do the trick of reversing the eye’s preference?

That did the trick for my taste, Huw.

Regarding Revision 1:

Huw,

Love the colors and lighting. The butterfuly of course is a great and surprising bonus!

The revisions are subtle, but effective. I do really like the crop suggested by Glenys. For me, just about everything but the butterfly is repeated throughout the frame, so cropping doesn’t take away anything, IMHO, but does bring the viewer closer to the butterfly.

Wrong lens or not, you made the best of it!
