Stick Season Is Over + Rework

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Yea, stick season is finally over and I couldn’t be happier as we are finally getting some nice spring colors in the trees. There was a light rain two days ago so Mike and I decided to head on over to Susquehanna SP, MD and check things out. The conditions were just about perfect. Over the last couple of years I have really begun to appreciate the spring color as the leaves are just starting to leaf out and produce some colors just as beautiful as those in the fall; all the while giving the viewer a glimpse into the surrounding woodland.

Specific Feedback

There are a couple of limbs along the right and left edges that I am on the fence about removing. Just wondering if you find them objectionable? Anything else you notice please feel free to bring it up.

Technical Details

Nikon Z 7, Nikon 24-200 @ 200 mm, f 11 @ 1/80 sec, ISO 200, Kase magnetic CPL, cable release & tripod.

I’m going to date myself, but “…Calling Susquehanna-222…”

Ed,

I love photographs like this that highlight the subtle intricate details of trees. Each leaf, twig, and bump. This just needs to be printed big so that those details can be marveled at and enjoyed. My only suggestion would be to burn down the ULC just a bit, or perhaps a slight vignette overall, would probably do it too.

I always feel a bit out of my league in “Landscapes”. There are so many top notch photographers here and feel I don’t really know ..it from clay.

The image is beautiful, Ed. I love the colours and the shapes.

I agree with @Youssef_Ismail about the ULC. Would you consider taking a slither off the top or burning it down? There are those two little sticks on the RHS that I would consider losing somehow.

Ed, I was out chasing scenes like this yesterday in central MD. This is a fine look at this Maple. I also like the touch of green in the upper left as both color contrast and saying more about early spring. The lichen covered trunks in the right half are very attractive and pull my attention, which has me wondering about how to get just a bit more attention to the left half…maybe a slight burning-in on the lichen covered trunks?

Many thanks everyone @Youssef_Ismail, @glennie and @Mark_Seaver for your thoughtful C&C as it is always appreciated. Here is a rework with your suggestions; I cropped some from the top to get rid of that bit of sky in the ULC and I slightly darkened some of the tree trunks. What do you think?
@glennie : No one is out of their league in the Landscapes Gallery. We are all here to learn from one another as we grow as photographers. I find that I can learn just as much from critiquing an image as I do from posting one. Please don’t be shy about offering a critique. Your suggestions were on the mark for my post.

Ed, I like the repost without the sky touching the top, but now I wonder about that one little, horizontal branch right in the middle of the very top. Maybe clone out or crop it out? There’s a lighter tree trunk in the middle that draws my eye a little. Does it draw me into the woods or do I get stuck on it? I like the subtle darkening of some of the trees.

Hi Glenys,
Oops. Thanks for picking up on that. I didn’t look close enough at the top edge after the crop. I will be sure to crop that off when I make my print.

Ed,

Wow, this is gorgeous. You guys are killing it with these spring trees!

I LOVE the rework! That ULC was going to be a nitpick of mine. Just one of those “eye magnet” things. And I was to continue on that theme, while not as much a distraction, there’s a black branch also on the left edge. Not a glaring item, but if you’re going to print - and you should! Then you might consider mitigating that one. And I don’t think that necessarily means cloning it. There are other means.

You’ve done a great job with the processing; avoiding the trap of maybe over saturating this. Beautiful work on this one!

Thanks Lon,
Glad you enjoy the image as much as I do. The suggestions from everyone pretty well nailed it. I will lighten that limb just a bit so that it will blend in a little better with the rest of the trees.

Oh, this is nice Ed. O love so many things here, but especially the contrast of the angled foreground trunks backed up by the vertical trunks behind. I think your updated version looks fantastic, but that’s a nice catch by @glennie .

Hear, hear!
