Take Off

I was on the Snake River at a crossing early in the morning waiting for elk to show up and cross the river. They never showed. Some common mergansers did. This guy took off right in front of me with good light and gave me a shot. Thanks for any comments and critiques.

I like the effect of the motion blur in this image, Richard. Some of the highlights look blown on my monitor. Did you try bringing them down in the RAW conversion? I like the composition in general. but you might want to consider cropping it a bit to remove the bright patches along the upper edge that pull ones eye out of the image. Alternatively, you could clone over them with darker areas or burn them a bit.

If you shot this in raw I wonder if you could recover some more white detail in the top left of the wing. I would crop the right and left bright areas out and make it longer left to right. there is nothing that says you are locked into a 4 x 6 ration.
nice catch considering how little time you probably had.
