About This Image
I travelled to Tweedsmuir National Park in October 2026 to photograph bears with Donna Feldichuk. Sadly we were too late in the season to spot any bears, but I got some terrific landscape images, and I played around with double exposures.

I have shared two images for this week’s challenge: one version is the scene in its original colour and the second version is a double exposure with muted tones. Which version do you prefer and why? What emotions do these two images evoke?

Hi Laura - two quite different treatments. Assuming your aim is the weekly colour challenge it rather than to be the first doesn’t it?
I like the various frame within a frame composition, the arc of the yellow tree in particular framing the hide, and then the window in the hide accessing the area beyond. This composition pulls the viewer nicely into the picture - and the different colours help.
Intentionally of otherwise the focus has a bit of an Orton Effect which is pleasing - maybe a bit of motion blur in the leaves perhaps?
You might darken the brighter area on the left is this pulls the away out and away from the subject and out of the frame. The hide is very bright - but that’s fine as the main subject in the image
The second image is very different and a bit more of a puzzle to the eye - I like the very limited palette and the tricks for the eye you have created with the double exposure. It’s interesting but personally for me, too much of a puzzle - so it’s not a particularly restful image to view. Takes me back to visual puzzles like where’s Wally with the grandkids.
Thanks Thomas for your detailed response. I did a little Orton effect to the coloured version. I think I lean to the muted palette because it is so out of character for me. It stretches my voundaries.
Both evoke a tranquil feeling for me, but I prefer the first photo. The color of the shelter really makes it pop, and it gives my eye something to focus on. I then looked at the leaves and branches above it, and then the grass below the shelter. In the second photo, the colors look a bit too similar, and the bear shelter is not as apparent. Both are interesting but my eyes and brain had to work a bit when looking at the second photo.
Laura: Different images altogether and I like both. The Orton effect on the full color is a wonderful complement to the scene and I also like the subdued color palette of the second. Nicely composed, captured and presented. >=))>
I too like both of these. The first does have lovely color that fits the theme nicely, and the second is a wonderful eye puzzle that made me stop and ponder.
For the color image, a tiny detail to consider is to remove the bits of grass on the edge right of center and in the lower right corner. As is they give me the feeling of encroaching, as opposed to being a part of, the scene.
