Trees in the Mist

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was on the Blue Ridge Parkway on a day when the clouds blanketed the landscape. It was beautiful, mystical. This image was shot at one of the overlooks, looking into the woods at the south side of the parking lot.

Specific Feedback

I like the way the leaves appear to dance through the image, the mist that makes it look so mysterious. I’m not sure about the branches in the LRC. I’ve worked on lightening them so that they’re not quite so intrusive. Successful or not?

You get an A for vision Susan. What I like is that this is not the usual fractal ‘tree branches in the fog’ image. What looks like chaos has a clear composition and area of main interest. Yes, vision is a good word for this image. It’s like an apparition that has appeared for one seeking it. I think the magic comes from the light tonal variation and in the gracefulness of the lines. The lines seem to be the right thicknesses and the wider tree provides a balance for all the thin ones. Really well done imo.

Thanks so much, @Igor_Doncov. I appreciate all you see in the image! That’s what I saw. Thanks again, Susanna

Susanna, You get kudos from me as well. Wonderful image with lots of mood.

Thanks, @Larry_Greenbaum!

I’ve stared at this one for a long time. My initial reaction was to find it a little too busy but the longer I studied it, the less I felt that way. The two main trees on opposite sides of the frame balance this out well, and the organized chaos between them leads my eye throughout the frame. Lovely work.

Thanks, @Bret_Edge! It is indeed organized chaos.

Beautiful Susanna. A typical image of you, delicate and secret. The leaves are often the real subjects of your photos and here they organize and structure the image, the branches only serve to frame them. I too think that the branches in the LRC are not in harmony with rest of the image. The ideal thing would be for me to standardize them to the others branches if possible. I love this photo.

The depth here is wonderful Susan. The distant trees really make this for me, and I think you’ve got an image in an image here. (Not an improvement on your original, it’s wonderful as is, but fun to play with.)

I really like this image. It’s quite different from the traditional “trees in the mist” - as @Igor_Doncov Igor rightly pointed out.
I feel that everything is there, and that no “tricks” were needed to help.

I like what you did, @John_Williams. It eliminates those branches in the LRC, which @Giuseppe_Guadagno referred to. Giuseppe, your comment about “delicate and secret” described me fairly well. I’m an introvert, which is uncomfortable and feels like a curse at times! :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks @joaoquintela! It was a beautiful, minimalist scene on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
