Poking ear & Mane

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

More from my Pryor Mountain trip. As I got more comfortable with moving around taking images of the herd, I found that the horses became more comfortable with me being there. I had a few experiences where they came right at me. I stood perfectly still for this image and two split and went around me. Whoa, I was in wild horse heaven! These images were shot at 180mm on my Nikon Z 180-600mm lens.

Specific Feedback

I’ve learned a lot from several wild horse submissions, there is a bit more contrast in this image than others. There was a fourth horse behind the three up front, with an ear and some mane behind the horse on the right. I cloned them out, thinking it would be a distraction. Seeking comments on composition and editing.

Beautiful horses, well captured. Great detail in the horses…you can even see a couple flies. Nicely blurred background that gives context to the horses. This must have been a great experience. The only tiny things I would suggest would be to remove the light colored dead tree on the right and to crop in on the right just a smidge so the distance to the edge of the frame from the horse’s rump and tail is the same as that of the horse on the left.

I am soo envious! What a great time you’re having.

I love the interaction of the horses. The horse on the left looks to be the same handsome one posted recently. Their wildness showing by their scars.

Great job on the ear removal. And the contrast looks better to me. I like your composition as is, but feel there is another one that’s a lot tighter. I like the tail swishes though. I might consider cropping out their legs and coming into their sides…losing there tails.
The roan’s lighter coloured rump draws my attention a little and would burn that down a little. What do you think of an radial gradient to encompass the eyes?

Can’t wait to see more!

Gary: you’ve captured a wonderful moment in the lives of these wild horses. I like how the two horses frame the third. The detail and scarring captured in their bodies shows the difficulty of life in the wild. My only suggestion would be to crop in just a bit to get rid of the dead tree in the LRC and to burn the remaining dead tree on the right edge.
