Whitebark Pine Snag

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I took this photo a couple of summers ago in a whitebark pine “ghost forest” in southwest Montana. As my wife and I stood outside our tent watching a storm moving in, I liked how the light was striking these branches and I took a couple shots. I didn’t expect much to come of it, but I ended up really liking the way the tangled branches look against the gray sky. Whitebark pine is an interesting tree that grows into all kinds of odd shapes. I really like photographing them because they have a lot of character, but I often find composition to be challenging since they seem to grow pretty haphazardly.

Specific Feedback

I’d appreciate any and all feedback.

Technical Details

54 mm, 1/80 sec., f/5.6, ISO 100. Converted to black and white in Lightroom and made a number of light and tone curve adjustments. I also added a touch of texture, clarity, and dehaze.
