Woodland Walk

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was walking a path in the woods and noticed the light spot lighting the tree in the background. I tried different perspectives and settled on this composition.

Specific Feedback

As per usual lately with me, I am not sure about the composition. It works for me but I don’t know what I don’t know but at least I know that! Any other feedback welcome.

I changed it to black and white as I really liked the tonal range of the image it simplifies a busy scene.

Technical Details

My bad on the ISO. I had my camera on auto iso. Ooops Thank goodness for denoise.

Wonderful! The composition works well for me and the light has a lovely ethereal quality! My only thought is to wonder about raising the detail the trunks a bit with a soft-edged mask not reaching quite to the edges.

The light is mystical/magical. Perhaps just rising the shadows would add the detail Diane was looking for. I would have stopped here as well. Lovely image!

This is quite an eye-catching scene and I can see why you stopped. I’ve been known to try for similar shots in the past. It’s hard to get a semi-organized composition with some through-line for depth, but this is a good example. You have a lot of elements at different distances to frame that magical sun. I’m not sure you need more detail in the trees since we know what to fill in there with our imaginations. It couldn’t hurt to experiment though.

Bill, this is great. It has to be seen in full size to truly appreciate the image and scene. Your composition pulls me through the scene and keeps my engaged. I like the B&W treatment a lot. This almost has an ultraviolet feel to it.

Well done.

Works perfect in B&W … The light really works and I can see the blacks and whites and grays and how they work together to create this peaceful image.

I agree with the others on all counts. These types of scenes can be challenging, and you have done very well here. There are some very bright highlights that you might try toning down a little; but not too much. I like the composition a lot. In the full-size image, one can see more detail in the dark trunks, so I think it is fine as-is. Nice job!

Noice choice on the B&W. THe BG light is very inviting and really draws you through the scene. Nice depth to the image. I think you’ve composed this just fine with nice separation between the vertical elements.

Wonderful image. It has that Romantic look suggesting that there is a spirit in Nature that we can feel but not quite understand. That sense of holiness that we can reach by passing through the trees. A destination that will raise our sense of being. For that reason I like that we’re seeing this through the trees rather than in the open. The center tree could be dodged a tad but the one on the left is about right. It’s important to maintain that contrast between light and dark imo.

PS the composition is good because there is balance and harmony without looking clicheish (rule of 1/3rds, centered, predictable placement of elements).

Thanks to everyone for the thoughtful analysis. Much appreciated! Sorry for the delay in responding. I was having a wonderful but busy visit to Acadia National Park.

I did experiment with the suggestion to either lift the shadows or raising the detail on the trunks a bit. I settled on raising the shadows on the front tree trunk a tad. I also tried to burn the brightest highlights a tad but that did not work for my eye.
