Zebra Twins

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was late afternoon in the the Madikwe game reserve in the North West Province of South Africa.
The hour was golden, the Zebras were very co-operative. Some days are good like that.

Perfect symmetry is hard to find in nature, other than reflections.

Technical Details

Nikon D7000 1/100 sec at f/5.6, ISO 1600
70 - 300 mm at 300.

Pieter, how nice to get the two looking at you at the same time with both Zebras heads nicely sharp. It’s fun looking carefully and seeing that there are subtle differences in the striping between the two.

Pieter - great to catch two zebras together like this, both with good poses, bright eyes, and ears perked.!
I’m afraid your 5.6 wasn’t quite enough to get both sharp - the back zebra is a little soft. For images with several birds/animals I usually am at F10-12 or more.
The dark area to the right is a bit distracting; you might consider lightening or removing them.
Nice catch!

Thank you Dennis. I appreciate your kind words.

Tank you Sandy, I appreciate your input.

This was 15 years ago, and I was already at ISO1600 at f/5.6. I guess I could have shot at 1/500 instead of 1/1000, but that still would only get me to f/8.
Noise was still an issue then, especially with a DX camera body. I think I made the appropriate technical choices.
