Description
I captured a bee and a bug on a sunflower recently. On a recent critique of mine, several folks indicated my backgroud was too dark. Hence on this one, after cropping in to focus more on the bee and to a lesser degree, the small bug, I did not darken the background as much.
A bee and a bug…looks to be an assassin bug, but I’m not 100% on that.
Overall the bright, sunny day works well with this kind of flower and the bee activity. It just says summer heat to me. The backgrounds look ok, but I wonder if the colors aren’t just a tad muddy. Not that it matters much back there and the colors look snappy and correct in the subject. Too bad the bee didn’t face you, but they don’t take direction well. The crop is a bit tight on the left so I think you could loosen that up if you wanted. I wouldn’t put the bee smack in the middle with this aspect ratio. Recently that’s been my nemesis - centered everything. Gah!
I like the way you handled the flower and the background, Gary. Looking at the original with the almost gray leaves on the left, I think you were wise to pretty much remove that area. However, that left the flower looking out of the frame. It looks as if you have loads of detail to play with, so you might consider cropping way in from the right to almost a square composition with possible just a tad more room on the top for the bug-just an idea to play with.
