A Cold Fast Plunge

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Here’s a tight look at another segment of Great Falls on the Potomac. I wanted to get the plunging water angling across the frame and splashing off the rock and some ice to better show the coldness.

Specific Feedback

The shutter speed was chosen to show the main details of the water motion, but not the smal splashing. For water moving this fast that’s around 1/5 s.

Technical Details

R5, 100-500 @ 363, 1/5 s, f/16, iso 100, tripod, polarizer and 4 stop ND filter. The polarizer’s light blocking combines with the ND filter to give me the range of shutter speeds that I want and it lets the greenish color in the water show.

Mark,

Perfect shutter speed. It shows the dynamic nature of the water while still holding detail in the flow. Even without the ice, it still feels cold. Smart use of the polarizer to bring out the water colors. Good work.

I love this photo! I think the tight framing was very much on point, putting the main flow of the fall on the left third of the frame. The greens and turquoise in the water compliment the yellows and browns of the rocks there as well. As you explained the shutter speed was pretty perfect as well, catching the beauty of the moving water. Nicely done!

Nice! I really like how the cascade starts to lead the eye out of the image and then diverts it back in with that little cascade over the rock in the FG. Love the color of the water.

Lovely image @Mark_Seaver, Well seen and processed. No nits.

Cold and powerful image. I love the texture in the water and I think your shutter speed was spot on for showing the power of this small section of the river. The turquoise water color really nice. The snow on the rocks and a couple of icicles hanging on for dear life add to the mood here. Nice find, Mark.

Hi Mark,
This is a flat out gorgeous waterscape! This definitely says cold to me with all those ice encrusted rocks and your SS choice was perfect for capturing some wonderful textures and details in the water. I also am loving the turquoise color of the water along with the raw power of the water as it roars through those rocks. I only have one tiny suggestion; and this is being real picky; but I would clone out that small dark section of rock along the top edge toward the ULC as it does catch my eye a little. Beautiful winter image.

A lovely example of well organised chaos. The image despite being a random tumble of falling water, is very well organised into a cohesive picture and as already mentioned by others the the turquoise hue of the water with the chosen shutter speed works beautifully with the chestnut colours of the rocks poking through and the sharp static featues of the ice.
