A Day To Soon

Critique Style Requested: Standard

Description

Depicted is the waning crescent moon on the 26th day of the lunar cycle. I usually photograph the new crescent when it first becomes visible after conjunction, but I was burning the midnight oil on another project and decided to make a go for the last phase of the moon. It was a stunning morning, but I was a day to soon for the last day in its cycle as the moon is about 7% illuminated.

Specific Feedback

Any feedback appreciated. Most every moon photo I make has the moon in the upper left corner of the frame, this one is different.

Technical Details

Nikon D850, Nikon 80-200mm at 200 mm f/4 MF lens, at f8 1/80 sec at ISO 1600. Processed in ACR and PS, with Denoise in ACR applied as I forgot to change the ISO to a lower setting.

Youssef, this image is beautiful! I’m trying to imagine the moon in the upper left corner since I haven’t seen your work previously. Its positioning in this image seems to be the winner to me as it sits on an imaginary diagonal from the lower left corner to upper right, a powerful “dynamic symmetry” technique.

What a wonderful sunrise – and the moon with the wispy clouds is the perfect touch! As much as I enjoy the waxing moon in evenings after the new moon, there is something special about the waning moons before sunrise the few days before . The air is always so cleaner and fresher then, and that comes across in your image. As to the placement int he frame – yes, it works for me because it leaves room for the “virtual sun” that is lurking just beyond the lower left corner. No suggestions! Thanks for sharing this lovely moment!

Very nice, Youssef. A gorgeous sunrise and I see nothing wrong with this moon a day too soon. the crescent works perfectly.

Hi Youssef,
The crescent moon’s location looks just fine to me and I love the gradation of colors from cool to warm. I also quite like those wispy clouds as well in the image. My only real suggestion would be to add just a little more land along the bottom as it looks a little cramped to me. Looks like a great way to start the day IMO.

I like the moon placement; that is a less common composition to have it towards the upper right. That’s a lovely tapestry around it too.

I tend to be greedy with photos that include the moon, and wish that it was larger in the image. I realize that it would have taken away a lot of the color if you zoomed in here, but I still wish. I’ll take this as is though, because if the moon was closer it would wreek havoc on the planet.

I really like the colors in this one! I personally would like to see just a bit more of the silhouetted landscape at the bottom, but otherwise I love the placement of the moon and the processing in the sky.

You’re getting pretty darn good at these crescent moon images. :grinning_face. My only small nit is what others mentioned about the amount of landscape at the bottom. Still a wall hanger imho.
