A Memorial

Image

Image Description

I’ve passed this bench in Port Jefferson many times and have always thought about the helmet left as a memorial. Today I went to an ice festival in Port Jeff and as I walked past the bench, I decided to take this photo. I’m glad I did.

Once on screen to process, I noticed detail I hadn’t seen before. The PJ sticker is of the local high school, and based on the weathering on the helmet, it must have been there quite a while before I first noticed it in August of last year. I can only assume a high school student lost their life in a collision with a motor vehicle.

I am glad this memorial has been left undisturbed and can only imagine the grief the family has gone through.

Excellent choice of angle, Jim. I think the image tells this story very well. The bits of rust on the metal fittings speak of it being in the weather for some time, yet the ribbons look like they’ve been replaces recently speaking of the ongoing grief of the family.

Thanks Dennis.

BTW, in my exhuberance I ended up posting three photos in this category yesterday, only to realize a short time later we’re limited to one a day. I’ll repost those photos over the next few days.

Talk about if anyone should have remembered this… :-/
