Critique Style Requested: Standard

Description

Great Egret
Sanibel Island, Florida
The number of birds at Sanibel has dramatically decreased over the last 10 years, and the devastation from the last hurricane is still very evident. It’s all very sad.

Beautiful preening behavior, Sandy. The whites look excellent. I’d be tempted to give it a bit more room top and left, but that’s probably just my taste.

A beautiful bird giving you a beautiful pose. You’ve captured it very well… I love the matching eye and bill colour!

Unlike Dennis, I wonder if you would consider making the image into a portrait rather than landscape. If you were to crop from the right, just to where the gorgeous little feathers are and take a slice of the left to keep the birds eye on a “third” line.

I also wonder about bringing down the hightlights just a smidge.

It’s a wonderful image Sandy!

Hi Sandy
I would leave just as it is. Everything builds to the Egret’s eye and beak holding that feather.

Hi Sandy, excellent preening image. Whites look really good to me and I like seeing the green around the bird’s eye. Framing and composition look good to me. Well done.

Hi, Glenys - thanks for the suggestion! I’ll try that crop when we get home from a weekend trip.
I did want to keep the vertical tail feathers on the lower right, though, as I think they add a lot. What areas do you see that are highlights? None from here…
PS Your website is excellent - you’re a multi-talented person and I’m so glad you joined us here!

Sorry Sandy, I should have said “whites”. But that’s only a suggestion for another version of an already amazing image. I have upgraded PC and monitor, so I do wonder if I’m seeing brighter now?

Calibrating well is tough - I always wonder what others are seeing, even with a good calibration. I mis-spoke earlier about your website - I meant your portfolio here on NPN - some great stuff! glad you’re able to post again!

I’ve been a away from photography for a while and wondered if I had a website somewhere that I had forgotton about. LOL.

A lovely catch of this egret preening with its breeding plumage. Since the story is the preening, I would consider a 8x10 vertical. also, please try lowering the exposure on the whites a hair, even perhaps adding a touch of Dehaze here to bring out more detail in the whites
