A Stroll in the Clouds

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Another from several taken near Richland, WA recently. Even though the crane is landing, it looks, to me, like it is walking on the clouds.

Specific Feedback

The darkness of the crane. It was a dark, cloudy day.

Technical Details

R5; 100/400 @400; 8.0; ISO:1250; 1/2500th; WB: cloudy.

Definitely has an ethereal feel, Jim, helped by keeping the crane small in the frame. The detail looks good and not too dark. Cool image.

Jim,

Definitely a mind-bending photo. It just looks like the crane has been cut out of a walking scene and pasted into a blank canvas, how trippy. I think the brightness of the crane looks fine.

Well done, perfect timing on your part. Is there any way to bring out the slightest detail in the background clouds to enhance the premise of the shot?

Great shot Jim, it certainly makes you look twice!

That cloud background makes this one rather unique, Jim, and the half deployed wings help with the illusion. Well seen and executed.

HI Jim
It is different and tell a story. I thin I would like to see the Crane just a little bigger.
Peter

Thank you all. I posted version with darkened clouds and bigger bird (by crop). Not sure if that is what @Peter_Morrissey and @David_Hunter have in mind.

This version does convey the “walking-on-clouds” a bit better, Jim. It brings out the transition between the dark cloud above and the brighter one just about foot level.

Dennis, It does, but I still like the original.

Cranes are good models. They often foresee what we like them to do. But walking on clouds! That is quite a new level.
Bigger or smaller in the picture does not matter to me, if only because the technical quality of the image is top.

This is soooooo good, Jim. It really does look like he’s walking on the clouds. I think I prefer the original with the bird being smaller in the frame with lots of room to roam. The second image feels too tight to me and I lose that feeling that he’s way out there actually floating/walking on a cloud.

Oh my gosh, love it! I saw you posted it on April 1 and thought, is this a joke? What I like is that you’ve captured a crane doing ordinary crane things but in a way that seems totally surreal.

A very cool shot, Jim. The weirdness of it (in a good way) keeps me looking.

Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions.
