Achieving Balance

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Captured on a Galveston, TX, beach. This is a very early image for me, where I was focused on bokeh and separation.

Specific Feedback

A minimalist photograph, is there enough there to hold the viewer’s interest?

Technical Details

1/320s at f/4, ISO 100
Nikon 70-200 VR II on a Nikon D5100
Basic LR work with some clarity and color

I like the shape of the rock and the position of the bird on it, Gary. To me, the faint dark lines in the background tend to detract a bit from the minimalist look and I’d be tempted to try a uniform background as an experiment-not sure if it would do what I want (so I had to try it).

Take it for what you will.

Thanks, @Dennis_Plank You make a good point. While I like blurry backgrounds, this one is somewhat distracting. Going to go play in PS to see what I can do about it.

Gary, this works very well as a minimalist view, with a very clean look at the bird standing in the water behind the stone. Many of the shorebirds will stand on one leg, which always look “funny”. Yes, some dodging of the darker strip that goes through the birds body to better match the surrounding will increase the minimalist sense.

Gary, for me this works as a minimalistic image. Both the bird and rock hold interest and I like the negative space. I think Dennis’s edit helps enhance the minimalistic feel.

Posted an edit that cleans up the background (I think it now reads more like sky or calm water.

I like your repost very much, Gary. The tone of the background works much better thant my casual grab at one.

Thanks, @Dennis_Plank! The concept was the right one (and the color is nicer, too).

The repost does it for me. I do like the results of the edit and the comp is fine as presented. The bird is positioned well in the frame. Well done…Jim
