Agrisculpture 3

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Ythan Wells Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

I do like the sculpted hillsides around Ythan Wells as viewed from the A96 road. During the summer the palette is overwhelmingly green with a velvet carpet of grass often punctuated by rectangles and trapeziums of growing wheat. These fields are less about straight lines and comprised of intersecting arcs and swirls. In one particular field I discovered an old stone bothy with its softly shadowed outline nestled in the crook of the hillside which lends the view a sense of scale and generates a focal point of interest, hopefully without compromising the intent, which was to display a sympathetic sculpting of the land through human interaction, deliberate or serendipitous. I did remove a power cable though.

Specific Feedback

Any feedback appreciated.

Hi Ian, This image is just lovely! Really well seen and captured. Thank you for sharing it with us!

Ian,

The green hills are alluring for sure with their patterns. But its the small building that just intrigues me. What is its story? Was it just a barn, or did someone live in it?

This is a great photo - I thought at first it was via drone, but it shows what can be had when travelling.

I very much like the way the fields are contour plowed, in sympathy with the gorge whch creates a lovely diagonal. The vehicle tracks around the bothy emphasize it in a subtle way, however the best for me is the shadows in the green fields which give an illusion of depth to the photo.

I wonder how this photo would look as part of a series, Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn?

I reckon it was lived in. There are two chimneys at the gable ends which suggests they had fire places for heating rather than a building simply used as storage or for livestock.

I really like the textures of the grass with the tracks along with that bit of wild in the middle and the old house really locks in the size of these fields. Excuse my ignorance, but is this Ireland? It sure reminds me of there. Well done!

Hi Dave its in Northern Scotland between Huntly and Aberdeen.

Ian

Absolutely stunning photo! Beautiful colors and composition. The house in the lower right perfectly balances the bare spots in the upper left. Very well done.

Thank you Tony you are very kind.

I’ll second @Youssef_Ismail’s thoughts. I enjoy the lines and color tones, but the bothy (I had to look that work up) really anchors the intrigue.
