An old classic - revisited

Critique Style Requested: Standard

Description

An old classic - Skógafoss waterfall in Iceland - revisited in a moody B&W image. The picture is from October 2023, the last time I was in Iceland. And I feel the need of going there again (and again…). In absence of that, I am reworking my old images…

Any feedback is welcome!

I love this image. The falls have a phantom look to them. This is a really great interpretation of a falls. The gradient sky gives it that look as though it’s bursting forward out of the darkness. I’m usually not a fan of slow shutter speed water but here it’s purposeful. Dreamlike.

@Igor_Doncov said exactly what I wanted to say aside from not liking long shutter speed water. A really striking photograph and B&W is perfect for it.

A beautiful image, Antonello. I think the long exposure works well with the almost abstract presentation of the surroundings and the very simple sky. Very well done.

@Igor_Doncov , @Youssef_Ismail , @Dennis_Plank thanks a lot for your comments! I am trying experimenting more B&W these days…

Fantastic image. I really like that I can see a little peak of the mountain behind the falls through the thick cloud cover/fog with the falls pouring out of the fog. I’ll be the third to mention the shutter speed and not being a fan of water that has little or no texture but this works because there is so much separation between the ribbons that it doesn’t just feel like milk. That dark space between the ribbons creates depth and texture and interest for me. I also love the thundering splash and the swirl of soft mist at the bottom of the falls and the lack of texture on the walls and the foreground of the scene. It really makes this very dreamy. The rock poking in from side on the bottom right portion of the frame could be cropped or cloned out without hurting the composition too much. Beautifully processed.

Thanks for your comments David! I see your point of cloning the rock in the LRC - on the other hand, this location is so iconic in Iceland that I preferred not to modify the scene… Indeed, I did not even clone away the (many) tourists but waited until it was dark and most of them went back to their cars - but still, just beyond the right edge of the image there was somebody walking around with a lamp… So I waited for him to walk away from the perspective I wanted to obtain,.,

I’m jumping on the bandwagon for this beaustiful image. I love its simplicity and simple beauty. When trying to critique my own images, I try and ask myself if I could live the image if it is on my wall for a long time and this is one that I very much doubt I would tire of. Congratulations!

Thanks for your comment Pat! Happy you like it!
