Cascading Force

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is an image of Skógafoss in Iceland from a trip a few weeks ago. I went with the smaller composition not only because there were many people around that I did not want in the shot but also because I have seen countless images of this waterfall with the same exact composition from a wider perspective. I was aiming to highlight the contrast between the soft mist, intensity of the water and the rugged cliff. This is one of the most epic waterfalls I’ve ever seen and had a powerful yet serene look to me which is what I wanted to convey in the image. I’ve been getting pretty burnt out on a lot of my images lately. I’ve found myself unintentionally chasing grand landscapes and it’s been unfulfilling for me. This image is a result of some of the experimenting i’ve been doing lately.

Specific Feedback

Is the contrast between the dark cliff and bright water effective, or is it too much?
Is the texture captured effectively?
Does the image create an emotional response?
Is it compelling and unique?

Matthew Welcome to NPN and thanks for a fine first post. I very much like your comp and how your SS rendered the water. The proportion of falls to cliff works great IMO. I would be tempted to bring up the shadows a bit and warm it slightly as well.

On a separate note, site guidelines recommend posting your images at 2000 pixels on the long side. Posting full size images invites piracy and forces the site server to downsize quite a bit. Great to have you aboard and looking forward to more of your work. >=))>
