Angel Fish

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

These thin broken reeds at the edge of Loch Cill Chroisd on the Isle of Skye were photographed on a totally mirror calm winter evening at twilight with reflected pink clouds fading in a darkening sky. Doubled up they look to me like Angel Fish.

Ian …may be a few light years since I crossed paths with you …I see a point in not making this a high key BW, The two tone bg , and the frame filling graph is a killer

Incredible. The color gradient creates such a soothing balance to the sharp angles of the bent grasses. It’s a stunning example of a type of contrast in an image. I could look at this for a very long time.

Beautiful! I love the colors which I see at sunrise and sunset, especially at the ocean but have never been able to capture like I saw it, which you were able to do. Excellent.

What a delightful abstract. Maybe it’s the nerd in me but I’m really enjoying pondering how the reflection of straight lines creates all these polygons. The soft colors that gently merge into each other is great. They direct the mood for this image into a more peaceful scene. Great composition as well. I have nothing to advise. This is as close to perfection as you can get.

Ian, a gorgeous image! I agree they look like angelfish, and remind me of earlier days when I bred and raised them in my aquariums. I stopped when the Northridge, CA major quake brought down all the aquariums and I had to scoop the fish into new water (thankfully, I had a supply of seasoned water ready for the water changes). Most survived.
The shaded BG here is perfect, and the lines and shapes just entrancing.
Exceptional image!

Ian,

Wonderful photo. The reflections are so perfect on that mirror smooth water that they almost do not even look like reeds. i have always wanted to capture a scene like this. You did a great job, maybe I need to find some still water somewhere with reeds and just sit there and wait withe camera ready.

Hi Ian,
This is gorgeous! The pastel colors are lovely and I love the soft color gradient in this intimate scene. I also find the twists and turns of the reeds to be very interesting as they fill the frame. The serene peaceful vibe also works quite well. I am sure this would make a beautiful print; perfect for some doctor’s office. No suggestions from me.

Sublime and gorgeous!!! The slightly high key treatment works so well for the pastel colors and delicate shapes. Excellent seeing, shooting and processing.

I wouldn’t mind a tiny bit more room on all sides. Adding canvas with content-aware fill would likely do it if not against your principles.

An absolute killer! Whats not to admire about this one!

Oh boy, @Ian_Cameron…this one sucked me right in. I have zero critique. Those colors, the simplicity, the patterns, the tack sharp reflections of the reeds…it’s all wonderful. Excellent work!

Well, not a lot to add.

One of the things I enjoy most about photography is when you see an image that is a cliche, but stands above the “also rans.”

The subtle color, perferct amount of subject, and exceptional angles set this apart Ian. I would love to add a grass reflection image to my portfolio, and for me this sets the standard I am shooting for. Kudos!

Nothing I can really add besides what has already been said. The perfection of this composition, colour gradient and the wonderful polygonal shapes take this image a step or three beyond the typical grasses-reflected-in-still-water images that we see so often.

Wow. I absolutely love this image. I like the triangles that end up getting formed by the grass. If i was to offer any suggestion it might be to clone out some of the grass on the right edge so that no grass leaves the shot and the patterns float in the image. Thats very nit picky though :grinning:

Thank you everyone. Hope everyone can see the shoal of Angel Fish. Glad you enjoyed it.

Dear Ian Cameron,
I know it is a bit late, but still. I agree with much of what has been said already. It is an enticing image. The soft gradation of colors and especially the delicate patterns of figures and their reflections in the water are stunning.

Thank you Leo. I am very pleased you enjoy it. The addition of the delicate pinks from reflected clouds and a twilight sky definitely enhanced the finished result.
