This image was created during a trip to Reelfoot Lake in northwestern Tennessee. We saw lots of birds, turtles and snakes. This particular snake is a Western Cottonmouth. This guy was hanging out in a part of the lake called Donaldson’s Ditch, some locals call it ‘Cottonmouth Alley’.

Hi Jim, I’ve been to Reelfoot many times. Great place for wildlife photography and I have seen the cottonmouths there too. This is a classic place to see these snakes at the lake and I like the pose with the head popping over the thick body. Details look good even though I see some halos over the snake’s head.
Very cool image, Jim. Nice job on the depth of field to get the snake sharp throughout. I am puzzled by one thing. I can’t see how the snake can be so sharp without any of the log it’s on being sharp. Not a criticism really, just trying to figure out how it happened.
