Another dose of short-eared owls :-)

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I visited the owl field again this morning. I saw one or two fly close by right after sunrise and before the sun fully hit the field.

Don’t worry, these guys migrate sometime in March so I’ll eventually have to find a different subject.

Specific Feedback

I had to push the ISO limit of the R7 to what I think is about the max to catch these birds in flight.

I have my usual question on sharpness and would be interested in any feedback.

Technical Details

Canon R7, 400mm f4 DO IS II, 1.4x extender III
ISO 6400, f5.6, shutter speed from 1/1000s, 1/1250s, 1/1600s, Hand held

Processed in DXO Pure Raw 3 and Photoshop.

These are great Allen. How do you get them to pose for you as they fly by. . .first and last face on shots are amazing!

I love these pictures! The second picture shows the intent stare forward as he is on a mission for breakfast. I like the third and fourth pictures for the top-side view. I was evaluating for my favorite one and gave up as they are all wonderful. I was out last evening here in south-central PA and of course they came out just as the sun dipped below the hill. Got some okay shots but nothing like these. Wonderful.

Another wonderful set of Short-eared Owl images, Allen. A good idea to take advantage of having them because it’s always difficult to know if they’ll be back next year. These all look great, though I do think on that final image that you could brighten the eyes just a bit more to make them really pop like some of the other images. I’m sure this is a more accurate portrayal, but I don’t think it would look unnatural to have them just a bit brighter.

Great set of images Allen! I’ve been trying to see/photograph a similar owl over here in Hawaii called the Pueo but no luck so far :weary:

Allen: this is a fabulous set of images with each and every one being excellent. You must be using the Force to get the owls to look you in the eye. :sunglasses: Richard
