Apostles sunrise

This mage was captured from the Twelve Apostles lookout in Victoria, Australia. Technical details: ISO 50, f8, 6 second exposure. Focal length 33mm.

Just wondering if there is any feedback about the composition or post processing.

This is a really beautiful scene Rob. I like the really long shutter speed, and how you had such nice light in the sky. It looks as though you have done some selective brightening of the midground, and darkening of the foreground. The sky has a great exposure, but the ocean/cliff area seems a bit too bright given the brightness of the sky. If this was mine, I would darken that area a bit so it comes across a bit more natural. I would also ease up with the darkening of the foreground. There is some lovely texture there with the grasses and bushes, and it looks like it is almost 2 stops darker than the midground area. If the immediate foreground was lightened, and the midground was darkened a bit, I think it would be more natural and better match that wonderful sky.

Rob, this is a great view of the Apostles with the sunrise showing gently in the water. The clarity of the of the land and the two sea stacks really stands out.

Beautiful light event and I really like the way you have framed it. I’d say +1 to everything @Ben_Horne said. Also, not sure if it is a cloning artifact…but there is something strange going on in the sky directly above the left sea stack.

A beautifully composed scene, Rob, with great colour harmonies from the warmth of the sky to the cool waters. For me there is a touch too strong a contrast between the darks of the trees and the brightest parts of the water and ( a personal prejudice perhaps showing here, as I know softness is much in vogue for waterfalls etc ! ) I do find the extreme slowness of speed for the waters makes them look a little unnatural. Whatever, the overall perspective and colour do make this something of a feast for the eyes.

Thanks for the feedback Mark

Thanks sean_bagshaw for the advice I see what you mean about the top left corner - will check out the cause when I get back home to a screen other than the phone - I have a recollection there was a car light there.

Thanks for that advice Ben - much appreciated

Thanks for the feedback Ian - much appreciated

Nice view Rob, with great comments above. I agree with Ben that this is worth working on for a more natural appearance, but is a scene worth the effort.

A very pleasing shot it looks very similar to how it was when I was there in 1997, probably the exact same viewpoint. It looks to me as though the brush could do with a little lightening as it is a little too close to being silhouetted.

Rob,

A beautiful and grand scene. I really like the very complimentary and think the treatment of the water works beautifully. My own personal view is that we don’t “see” like a camera does and therefore and fixed shutter speed whether it be 1/1000th of a sec, or 6 seconds… neither is “natural” so to speak. We “see” motion, stillness, etc. as our brain processes thousands of things simultaneously… anyway, I digress.

I would agree the middle bg cliff is a little bright relative to the overall scene (NOT overexposed mind you).

The main thing I wanted to comment on is the foreground vegetation. I just looks un-naturally dark to my eye. Kind of a similar thing with bright spots/areas, the eye is pulled and in this case “weighted” too much visually. I think I understand the thought here by reducing the detail and luminosity the viewer might not be directed or distracted by the foreground. The good thing though as it does frame and ground the image nicely. I would want to balance the light a little bit. But that’s just me.

Beautiful scene as as mentioned, most certainly worth maximizing the beauty here.
